UN PAESE DI CALABRIA (A VILLAGE IN CALABRIA)
by Shu Aiello e Catherine Catella, Francia, Italia, Svizzera 2016, 90’
Riace is a small town in southern Italy that many young people have left in recent years in order to build their futures elsewhere, thus leaving behind many houses in ruin and many old people. Is the town destined to die? Perhaps not. Because migrants escaping war and poverty have started to land along the Calabrian coasts. These landings, considered dangerous by many people, have become the hope for a rebirth of the town. This is the story of an administration and a citizenry who were able to look far, ahead, making hospitality and integration a mission. It is a tale made of people, relocated lives, people’s devotion, political commitment and struggle against the ‘ndrangheta. It is the report of a brave transformation driven by a principle: no one can save himself alone.
