Directing workshop with Luca Ciriello

What is the relationship between documentation, aesthetic research and denunciation? How can we apply an anthropological gaze to the narrative of migration? What are the challenges and the difficulties of a filmmaker’s work under complex and socially fragile circumstances? Luca Ciriello, a Neapolitan-born filmmaker, will discuss these questions with students and fans by reconstructing his professional journey and presenting and discussing his award-winning documentary L’armée rouge.

L’ARMÉE ROUGE
by Luca Ciriello, Italy, 60 min

Idrissa Koné, aka Birco Clinton, lives in an asbestos container in the eastern suburbs of Naples and nurtures his dream of becoming the king of coupé décalé, a style of music born as an opposition to the music of Ivory Coast’s regime. In order to succeed, he formed l’armée rouge, a band of Ivorian boys who support him and help organize his big Christmas party.
