THE LONGEST RUN

by Marianna Economou, Greece 2015, 75’

Jasim and Alsaleh are underage refugees in a Greek prison. Just arrived from Syria and Iraq, they have been arrested on charges of illegal immigrant trade. Thanks to the exceptional opportunity to access the juvenile prison and to the courtrooms, this documentary follows the two friends closely while incarcerated, during the trial and after the verdict, with a narrative suspense that highlights how very young people are forced to transport migrants across Greece’s borders, while the traffickers unpunished continue to do their business on their shoulders. If Jasim and Alsaleh will be found guilty there will be very heavy sentences. The telephone conversations between the two boys and the mothers in their homeland torn by war, accentuate the double imprisonment that these families experience. No one knows how and when their long run will end.
